Margaret Atwood - The edible Woman

What happens when you begin to identify with things that you consume? What do you do when the circle of foods that you can eat shrinks until not even vegitables are safe?

My thoughts and spoilers under the cut. )

Aug. 20th, 2008 02:27 am A recommendation for all

I'd like to make a recommendation of my own:

Though I am typically a fiction reader, I think one of the best books I've ever read is I Have Seen the World Begin: Travels Through China, Cambodia, and Vietnam by Carsten Jensen (a Dutch writer). It is so well written...I have that book FILLED with little color-coded post-it tags on amazing quotes, well-written passages, and fascinating bits of historical information.

Check it out!

Aug. 20th, 2008 02:08 am New!

Hi everybody, I am new to this community.

I love books and I love to read so here I am! I just got an Amazon Kindle and have read two books on it already (A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and Small Gods by Terry Pratchett which was a re-read for me)

My reading taste is fairly eclectic. I was thinking I'd list my favorite authors and see if anybody would recommend something by another author (since I have made a point to read every book by almost all of these authors already) that sounds up my alley:

Terry Pratchett
Tom Robbins
David Eddings
Christopher Moore
Kurt Vonnegut
Robert Asprin
Amy Tan
Jane Austen
Jasper Fforde
Piers Anthony
L. Frank Baum
Morgan Llywelyn (also please recommend something by her other than druids or finn mac cool and sequels)
Elizabeth Hayden

types of books I like:
fantasy, but not anything too crazy. anything set in china. humorous writing. legend fiction. memoirs or fiction written like a memoir. books about the holocaust.

Aug. 19th, 2008 10:40 pm Allie & Greg

I've decided that my favorite wedding may always be the one that I've just shot, but Allie and Greg will likely rank as one of my favorite wedding couples of all time. They were so much fun to work with, as were their friends and family, many who have been a part of their lives for years and years. They were just hilarious, even though the temps reached over 100 degrees that day. I have about 100 favorite pictures already, but I've whittled it down a bit for the sake of your viewing pleasure.

Aug. 20th, 2008 01:03 am Cemetery Cheese @ Forest Lawn

I think that if you're gonna do something as overdone as cemetery pictures, you should go big or go home. Why? Because everyone, their mother and their dead dog Sparky does it.

I never did cemetery photos. Most people do them when they're like 15 and feel the need to act ubergoth 24/7/365, but I guess I never got around to it. I made up for it at 25. I suppose I finally came across the right cemetery. When I first visited Forest Lawn in January of this past year(before I moved to the icy tundra that is Buffalo), I told my friends that I totally HAVE TO HAVE cheesy goth photos at Forest Lawn, because it's just perfect.

I'm so glad I did it now as opposed to at like 15 when being THE GOTHEST OF THEM ALL was one of my goals in life. When you're 15 "gothing is siris bidniss".

Photobucket

It is every Buffalo goth's rite of passage to take photos in Forest Lawn Cemetery. While in Rome.... )

Been lazy with posting new stuff lately.
I should fix that shortly...

Aug. 20th, 2008 10:40 am The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne - Take Two

Set during the Holocaust, at Auschwitz, you know going into this that it's going to be bad. And it is.

The Boy is the Striped Pyjamas is a brilliantly horrific book. It's sad, but has moments that make you laugh. It's scary, in a way that no crime novel, no thriller can be. The very last line is sinister. It made me think about things I'd never really considered before.

Aug. 19th, 2008 09:20 pm "En Prise"

The Pawn has been captured -En Passant-

Why
 must they leave?
Where do they go?
Each a chess piece. porcelain. f r a g i l e.
An unknowing player, until eventually each one is plucked. s h a t t e r e d...
[Tossed Aside?]

Time is precious, but even so, the child in me wants to chase the rabbit down the hole
Just to know where it leads.

Is it a game of wit, or logic, schemes...or merely a game of fate?
Will I look up only to see that I was playing against the Devil?
-And will she grin at me?- flaunting those pearl white blades enveloped in blood stained lips, and say
"Checkmate."
Then I'll realize the world was never my oyster.

Each of us will metamorphe into a memory- then a personage passed on from one generation to the next through stories and photographs- until one day the stories are forgotten, the photographs disintegrated and we are nothing- but dust.

Aug. 19th, 2008 08:41 pm Brennan, Marie: Warrior and Witch

Warrior and Witch
Writer: Marie Brennan
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 420

It's been a while since I read the first book of this duology, Doppelganger (or now titled Warrior thanks to the re-release), but I'm glad I finally got around the conclusion (also titled, thanks to the re-release, as Witch). Brennan's prose has improved with this second book, and the problems I had with Doppelganger I don't have with Warrior and Witch, which made me quite a happy camper. And I will add that I feel these books are best read back-to-back. Doppelganger stands on its own, but really, these two books make up a whole, and it's important to read them in order to get the whole story.

The premise: when a witch is born, a doppelganger is created. In order for that witch to achieve her full powers, the doppelganger MUST be killed, or the witch's magic will spin out of control and kill them both. Only Mirei has found a way out of this bloody tradition, and not everyone is so accepting of the change of rules. The witching community has divided, one side determined to embrace Mirei and her new magic, and the other side determined to destroy not only Mirei, but all the other doppelgangers as well. Mirei must protect these girls while trying to help mend the rift between the two camps, and stay alive in the process. Because her new magic is killing her.

The full review, with spoilers, may be found in my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.

REVIEW: Marie Brennan's WARRIOR AND WITCH

Happy Reading! :)

Aug. 19th, 2008 03:41 pm A forgotten fetish

At work, I am training this woman who I find myself attracted to on a small level (I have a soft spot for chubby girls with big tits). In the act of training her on the computer, I made sure I was close to her physically, and on occasion, "accidentally" brushed her breasts on the back of my arm. I pretended, of course, that I didn't feel a thing, and she never mentioned it. I also made sure that my leg was close to hers, and at several times, they were touching.
Anyone else love frottage?

Aug. 19th, 2008 11:03 pm Late to the Party

Didn't know about this place, wish I had as I would be planning on reading more. Should get 5 books read this month, more if I can.
Hopefully I will be getting through all 4 books in David and Leigh Eddings series, 'The Dreamers' (am just starting book 3, and so far the series has all the annoying Eddings hallmarks while still managing to be readable). Each book is about 500 pages long.
Also reading 'And Less Than Kind' by Mercedes Lackey and Roberta Gellis in e-book format from Webscriptions but am only a quarter of the way through that.

Aug. 19th, 2008 05:08 pm Heels on Hardwood (read me fourth)

"Am I too late?" She's sweet. Girly. Balanced perfectly between meek and sultry.

"Not at all, my dear. Please, come in." Click. Click. Click. Heels on hardwood.

A new kind of fear fills me. A new terror quivers within me. A woman. A woman is here in my space. This is where Daddy and I play. No one else has ever invaded it. No one else has ever touched him while I am present. Seething jealousy rages through me as I listen to them kissing above me.we have company )

Aug. 19th, 2008 03:26 pm Brittany & Matt's Wedding : Lancaster, Mass (+ an exclusive offer for LJ brides!)

For those couple's who choose to work with me before September 1st I'd like to offer your choice of a complimentary engagement session or 10 additional complimentary pages in your wedding album!

Now, without any further promotional interruption, Brittany & Matt's wedding ceremony at the Thayer Performing Arts Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts.
